Few things are as frustrating as an air conditioner that runs all day but never cools the house. If your AC is blowing warm or room-temperature air, the cause is almost always one of these seven issues. We'll cover what you can check yourself and what needs a technician.

1. Low Refrigerant From a Leak

How to Narrow It Down Yourself in Five Minutes

Before you call, a quick check tells you — and your technician — a lot. Go to the thermostat and confirm it's set to 'cool' and the fan to 'auto.' Then step outside to the condenser: is the fan spinning? If it's silent, check your breaker panel for a tripped AC circuit. Back inside, pull the filter — if it's gray with dust, that alone can choke airflow enough to freeze the coil and stop cooling.

Now feel the two copper lines at the outdoor unit. The larger, insulated one should be cold and sweating; the thinner one warm. If neither is cold, or you see ice on the lines, the system likely has a refrigerant or airflow problem that needs a technician.
